Beginner’s Somatics for Pain Relief

What is somatic exercise?

Body IQ Somatics is not an exercise class so much as it is a moving mindful meditation. Your brain will be engaged just as much as your body. It is a very effective class for achieving great flexibility, posture, and ease of movement.  It is great for people of all levels of ability.  It helps those who have any chronic pain, stiffness or tension in muscles leading to hip problems, back pain, RSI, sciatica, fybromyalgia, migraines, etc. But it’s not just for people in pain. It is also a great stress management technique, helping focus, relaxation and breathing. It leaves you feeling a general sense of wellbeing, sharper, calmer, more connected and more alive.

In this unique mat-based class you will be encouraged to slow down your movements and focus on the internal sensations of your body. You will have your eyes closed for the majority of the class so you can focus on the clear verbal instructions given to you by the teacher and mentally visualise the movements. The effect of this is that your muscles will start to let go of tension, chronic pain will start to dissipate, you will become calmer and more focused.  With regular practice your mind and body will start to become better co-ordinated as it deepens your neuro-muscular connection and increases your sense of awareness.

Even in the short term you will feel the benefits. After just one class you will already notice that you are feeling lighter, free-er and much more relaxed than when you arrived.

Gore Laughlin is highly qualified in the field of physical training and is especially interested in injury prevention, rehabilitation and movement education. He has been practising and researching methods of mind-body exercise for 15 years. Fairly early on he came to realise that there isn’t one particular discipline which is the right one for everybody. There is no “one size fits all” answer to an optimum fit and well body. Realising that most of his clients suffer from the adverse effects of a sedentary 21st century lifestyle such as stiffness, muscle tension, chronic pain and lack of range of movement through their own individual postural bad habits, he became concerned at some of the exercises that they were attempting to do in standard Pilates and yoga classes, etc. knowing that unless people were at a higher state of “body awareness”, they would be more likely to injure themselves than ever get fitter or stronger. Gore’s focus is firmly on helping people get more educated and more attuned in their own body which will then lead to greater strength, suppleness and overall fitness but to achieve this SAFELY and SMARTLY. He became convinced that the mind-body connection is the key to wellness and incorporates his vast knowledge of this into every class he does.

Gore is very clear and direct with a “no-nonsense” approach to your health and he expects a level of commitment from you too! He has an amazing gift for leaving his clients feeling worked, revitalised and yet incredibly relaxed – all at the same time.
